Just because an HVAC contractor is well-known doesn’t mean they are the best choice for your needs. HVAC contractors will be ever in demand because people and businesses will always have a need for their HVAC servicing, replacement or repair expertise. Do your research and check the contractor’s reputation before hiring them.

Where to Look for Prospects

You can start with Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA). This is a non-profit organization with over 60,000 professionals and 4,000 businesses as members, all of which are engaged in the indoor environment field and energy services. These members are all in good standing and can provide referrals for past jobs.

You can also visit consumer review and rating websites, where you can find out if the contractor or company you are about to hire is reliable and performs superior quality work. Otherwise, you can simply ask people for recommendations. Your friends, relatives and coworkers will usually be happy to help.

The Better Business Bureau

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is very useful if you want to verify an HVAC contractor’s consumer ratings. On its website, you will be able to check whether your prospective contractor has a history of being the subject of consumer complaints. Get in touch with your local BBB office for any inquiries. The Contractor’s Credentials

Know whether your prospective HVAC contractor is experienced in the repair, maintenance or replacement of your current system, as this is important in preventing misunderstanding or technical issues in the future. If the plan is to install a new system, be sure that the contractor you hire is specialist in the specific brand or model your equipment comes in.

Important Paperwork

> Licensing

Depending on your location, an HVAC contractor may have to get a state, municipal, or county license. Check the Contractor’s License Reference Site and the National Contractors website to know if HVAC contractors in your state will need a license.  Check out Air Conditioning Repair Spring for more details.

> Bonding

A contract license surety bond is necessary to shield your against unfair dealings, and also to protect you financially in case there are problems with the agreement.

> Worker’s compensation insurance

In the event that a worker suffers an injury as a result of doing his job on your property, you will be spared from financial liability if the contractor has worker’s compensation insurance.

The Contract

Keep all your correspondence in writing, right from your initial inquiry. Emailing instead of calling the company is usually better as it gives you a record of what has been said or promised.

Finally, all quotes or bids should be returned in official writing, and before you sign the contract, make sure it contains the following:

> start and end dates of the project

> a breakdown of labor and equipment costs

> schedule and mode of payment
